What is life insurance?

Life insurance is a policy that pays a cash lump sum to your family if you pass away during a set period.

You choose how long the policy lasts and how much it will pay out, then pay a monthly premium while the cover is in place.

Your personal circumstances will determine your eligibility and the cost of your policy.

Do you need life insurance?

You may need life insurance if you have a partner, children or anyone else who relies on you financially.

If you were no longer around, a life insurance pay out could help to cover:

  • The mortgage - helping your family stay in their home
  • Everyday living costs - supporting the lifestyle your family are used to
  • Funeral expenses - helping towards the average basic UK funeral cost of £3,828[1]
  • A financial gift - leaving money behind to support your loved one’s future.

What are the main types of life insurance?

TIE LEVEL TERM5

Level term

Level term life insurance pays a lump sum if you pass away during the policy term.

The amount of cover you choose stays the same for the whole term, which can make it a good option for helping to cover an interest-only mortgage, debts, family living expenses or other major costs.

TIE DECREASING TERM

Decreasing term

Decreasing term life insurance pays a lump sum if you pass away during a set term, but the amount of cover you choose reduces over time, typically in line with a repayment mortgage.

This type of policy usually offers the lowest monthly premiums.

Other types of cover

Joint life insurance

A joint policy covers two people, like a married couple, under one policy. If either partner passes away during the policy term, a pay out is made to the surviving partner.

Whole of Life

A whole of life policy provides lifelong protection and pays out a fixed lump sum when you pass away. The policy can help cover a range of costs such as mortgage repayments, family living costs, funeral costs, or inheritance tax.

Whole of life insurance is not yet available through The Insurance Expert.

Life and critical illness cover

This policy combines life insurance with critical illness cover, paying out if you’re diagnosed with a serious illness or you pass away during the policy term. It covers serious conditions including cancer, heart attack and stroke.

Life and critical illness cover is not yet available through The Insurance Expert.
